The 411 on 5th Grade
Current PlansWelcome to the week of 4/24/17
Here we are already in the fourth week of April, and looking forward to the summer! This week we will be working on poetry. We will investigate this genre in exploration of it's beauty and the craft of creation. Students will be reviewing skills previously encountered with poetry this year, and will also be adding elements of poetry writing and sharing. Writing Students will continue the journey into writing expository, informational texts. We will continue our work this week in the idea of writing an "expert topic" on a subject of interest to our scholars. Students will choose topics they are "experts", work through those topics to find an interesting angle, and finally settle on one they think will be the most successful. We will then begin working on drafting our writing in which we have already begun flushing out some of the knowledge we currently have, the knowledge we don't have, and the knowledge we would like to have on this subject. Our scholars are practicing their research and note taking skills as they find out new things to learn in their 'field of expertise.' We will continue this process, as well as the steps in the writing process. Reading/Language Arts Skills We are ready for all sorts of fun this week with great new activities to keep us going through the home stretch of this year! Students will begin the week by reviewing key concepts in poetry. We will revisit the most vital elements, brush up on our figurative language vocab, and then become writers and creators. Students will be participating in one or all of a variety of poetry exploration including (but not limited to) blackout poetry, reversal poetry, paint chip poetry and a combination research/writing poetry poster! We will also continue our novel groups this week! Students are well on their way through the novels they have chosen. Students are working in their 'book clubs' to read, think, write about, and discuss these terrific books. Students collaborating on a novel allows them the opportunity to share their own insights as well as hear those of their peers. HOMEWORK: Students will be assigned 80 minutes STAMP due Friday. Lesson Objective:
Students will understand, make inferences, and draw conclusions about the structure and elements of poetry, providing text evidence Language/Oracy Objective: Students will use popular music to analyze and evaluate the impact of sound effects, sensory details and figurative language as a whole class, small groups, and individually. College Readiness SkillsCollege and Career Readiness:
Locate explicit textual information, draw complex inferences, and analyze and evaluate the information within and across texts of varying lengths. Use poetic text and knowledge of skills to form an overview of poetry and to determine use of literary laguage and devices. Draw and support complex inferences from text to summarize and draw conclusions. |
Parent and Scholar Reminders Remember to bring books, homework or other materials that will keep your brains, minds, and mouths busy in the Green Pod each morning. It is a requirement to have our materials ready each day in class including a book for independent reading time. Students are more than welcome to have one book at home to use for STAMPhomework, and one at school for independent reading. Otherwise students can have one book that is taken to and from school daily. **note- Students are asked to come prepared for class each day with materials and homework. Forgetting to bring their signed STAMP in agendas, or their book, will result in a homework check mark. Achilles' Additions
